Gulangyu Island, Xiamen
Gulangyu is a small, car-free island just a short ferry hop off downtown Xiamen, and it is the single sight most visitors come for. Pianos drift out of open windows, footpaths wind past hundreds of colonial-era mansions, and there is not a single car or scooter on the whole island — only walkers, hand-pulled carts, and the occasional electric buggy. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2017, recognizing the unusual mix of Chinese, Southeast Asian, and European architecture that grew up here after Xiamen opened to foreign trade in the 1840s.

What to see
The island rewards aimless wandering, but a few spots anchor a visit. Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan), the highest point at 92 meters, gives a sweeping view over the rooftops and back across the water to the Xiamen skyline. Shuzhuang Garden, a seaside villa garden built in 1913, hides the Piano Museum, which fits the island's nickname as "the island of music" — Gulangyu has produced an outsized number of Chinese pianists. The Organ Museum at Bagua Tower holds one of the largest pipe-organ collections in Asia. Beyond the ticketed sights, the real pleasure is the lanes themselves, lined with old consulates, churches, banyan trees, and small cafes.

Getting there
Foreign tourists take the ferry from the Dongdu (Xiamen Cruise Terminal), not the downtown local pier, which is reserved for residents. Book round-trip tickets in advance through the "Xiamen Ferry" mini-program in Alipay or WeChat, using your passport for real-name registration — you can reserve up to 10 days ahead. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, and tickets are valid for a 20-day return. Ferries to the island run roughly from early morning to early evening, so plan your last boat back.
Practical notes
Give yourself a full day, or at least a long half-day. Wear comfortable shoes — the island is hilly and entirely on foot. A combo ticket covers the main scenic sights if you plan to enter several. It gets crowded on weekends and Chinese holidays, so an early ferry pays off.
