Folded Brocade Hill, Guilin
Introduction
Folded Brocade Hill (Diecai Shan) rises from the west bank of the Li River in the heart of Guilin. Its name comes from the way its limestone cliffs are split into neat horizontal layers, so that from a distance the rock looks like folds of stacked, multi-coloured silk. Compact yet packed with scenery, it has been a favourite climb for poets and travellers for more than a thousand years, and remains one of the easiest ways to earn a complete view of the city.
The hill is really a cluster of peaks and caves. The highest, Bright Moon Peak (Mingyue Feng), is reached by a steep stone staircase that passes pavilions, carved inscriptions and shaded terraces. Along the way you walk through Wind Cave (Feng Dong), a natural through-passage where a cool draught blows year-round and the walls are covered in Buddhist carvings and cliff poems left by visitors over the centuries.

What to See
From the summit terrace and Diecai Pavilion, the reward is a 360-degree panorama: the green ribbon of the Li River curling past the old town, the famous sugar-loaf karst peaks rising on every horizon, and the rooftops of Guilin spread out below. It is widely considered the best in-city viewpoint in Guilin and a classic place to watch the sunrise.
The hill also carries real historical weight. Generations of scholars climbed it and left calligraphy on the rock, and in the modern era figures such as Marshal Zhu De and educator Xu Teli ascended and inscribed poems here, traces of which can still be seen along the paths.

Getting There
Folded Brocade Hill is in northeastern central Guilin, on the west bank of the Li River. It is a short taxi or ride-hail trip from the city centre and several local bus routes stop nearby. From the riverfront and Fubo Hill it is an easy walk, so many visitors approach on foot along the bank.
Best Time to Visit
April to November offers the lushest greenery and the clearest river views, with early morning best for light and cooler temperatures. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer is hot and humid but rewards an early climb, while winter is quiet and crisp.
Practical Tips
Allow one to two hours for an unhurried visit. The climb is steep but short, with handrails on the main staircase. Bring water in warm months, wear non-slip shoes, and combine the hill with nearby riverside sights for a satisfying half-day on foot.
Highlights
- Summit panorama of Guilin's karst skyline and the Li River from Bright Moon Peak
- Layered rock strata that look like folds of coloured brocade
- Breezy Wind Cave (Feng Dong) lined with Tang- and Song-era cliff inscriptions
- Diecai Pavilion, a classic spot for sunrise over the river
- Carved poems and calligraphy left by visiting scholars and statesmen
Travel Tips
Go early for sunrise
The pavilions near the summit face east over the Li River, making early morning the best light and the coolest climb. Aim to arrive close to opening.
Wear grippy shoes
The stone staircase to Bright Moon Peak is steep and can be slick after rain. Sturdy, non-slip footwear makes the 1-2 hour visit much easier.
Combine with neighbours
Diecai sits a short walk from Fubo Hill and the riverfront, so it pairs naturally into a half-day on foot along the west bank.
