Guilin 3-Day Itinerary: Li River Cruise, Karst Peaks & Longji Terraces (2026)

11 min read

"East or west, Guilin's scenery is best," goes the old Chinese saying — and the karst peaks rising out of the Li River really are the landscape on the back of the ¥20 note. Three days lets you see the city's hills and caves, take the iconic river cruise to Yangshuo, and climb to the Longji Rice Terraces. This itinerary suits all travellers and is loveliest in April–October (misty spring, lush summer, golden terraces from late September); winters are cool and quieter.

Each stop links to its own guide with hours, tickets and a map, so feel free to reorder.

Trip highlights

Day 1: Guilin City Peaks & Caves

Start with the city's mascot, Elephant Trunk Hill, where a limestone arch dips into the water like a drinking elephant. Next, head to the Reed Flute Cave, a 240-metre cavern of dramatically lit stalactites and stone "curtains."

In the afternoon, climb Folded Brocade Hill or the Solitary Beauty Peak & Jingjiang Princes' City for a sweeping view over the rooftops and surrounding karst. After dinner, take the Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise, gliding past the floodlit Sun and Moon Pagodas. If you have spare time, the Seven Star Park is the city's largest green space.

Day 2: The Li River Cruise to Yangshuo

This is the day you came for. Board the Li River cruise in the morning for the four-hour float down to Yangshuo, drifting past bamboo groves, water buffalo and the procession of peaks that inspired centuries of ink paintings. Sit on the upper deck for the best views and keep your camera ready around Xingping, the exact scene on the ¥20 banknote.

In Yangshuo, wander West Street, rent a bike along the Yulong River, or simply find a riverside café. Buses run back to Guilin in about 1.5 hours, or stay overnight in Yangshuo if you'd rather slow down.

Day 3: Longji Rice Terraces

Trade water for mountains with a day trip to the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces, about 2–2.5 hours north of Guilin. Hand-carved into the hillsides by the Zhuang and Yao peoples over 700 years, they ripple from valley floor to ridgeline.

Base yourself at Ping'an village for the gentler, classic viewpoints, or Dazhai/Jinkeng for the more dramatic ridgelines and a cable car. Allow plenty of time on the road and wear proper shoes for the stone paths. Head back to Guilin in the evening, in time for your onward train.

Where to Stay in Guilin

Central Guilin (around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes / Zhengyang pedestrian street) is best for Days 1 and 3. For a slower pace, spend a night in Yangshuo near West Street or out among the Yulong River fields. See our guide to where to stay in China.

Practical Tips

  • Getting in: Guilin North and Guilin West stations link by high-speed rail to Guangzhou (~2.5–3 h) and beyond; the airport adds long-haul links. Plan with our China train booking guide.
  • Book the cruise early: Li River boats sell out in peak season — reserve a day or two ahead and confirm your boarding pier.
  • Apps: Set up the essential China travel apps (maps, translation, mobile pay) before you arrive.
  • Weather: Pack a light rain layer — the misty drizzle that softens the peaks is part of the magic, but it's frequent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is three days enough for Guilin? Yes. Three days covers the city sights, the full Li River cruise to Yangshuo and the Longji Rice Terraces. A fourth day lets you slow down with cycling around Yangshuo.

Is the Li River cruise worth it? Absolutely — the Guilin-to-Yangshuo stretch is the signature experience of the region and the scene on the ¥20 note. Choose a full boat cruise rather than a short bamboo-raft segment for the classic route.

When is the best time to visit Guilin? April to October is greenest; the Longji terraces are flooded and mirror-like in spring and golden from late September. Winters are cool, misty and far less crowded.

How do I get to the Longji Rice Terraces? Direct tourist buses run from Guilin (about 2–2.5 hours). Many travellers join a small-group day tour, which handles the transfers and village entry.

How does Guilin fit into a longer China trip? It's an easy high-speed-rail hop from Guangzhou and the south. See our 10-day China itinerary for ideas on linking it up.
