Baofeng Lake, Zhangjiajie

Baofeng Lake, Zhangjiajie

An Emerald Lake in the Sky

After days of dramatic peaks and glass walkways, Baofeng Lake is Wulingyuan's gentle counterpoint. This calm, jade-green lake sits high among forested sandstone hills within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, its still water mirroring the cliffs above. The relaxed highlight is a boat cruise across the lake, during which Tujia ethnic singers in traditional dress call out folk songs from the banks and small wooden boats — a charming, low-effort half-day for families and anyone needing a rest.

What to See

The lake is partly natural and partly held by a small dam, sitting at around 400 metres elevation. The 30-minute boat tour glides past islets and sheer green walls, pausing for the famous call-and-response folk singing between performers. A short walking trail and viewpoints around the shore let you photograph the lake from above before or after the cruise.

Opening Hours

Open daily, generally 07:30–17:30; boats run continuously through the day, more frequently when busy.

Tickets

Entry including the boat cruise costs around ¥96. It is a separate ticket from the main Wulingyuan multi-day pass, so budget for it on top.

Getting There

Baofeng Lake is just outside Wulingyuan town, a 10–15 minute drive or short taxi from most Wulingyuan hotels — one of the easiest add-ons in the area.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn bring the clearest reflections and most comfortable boating weather. Mornings are calmest, with mirror-like water before the breeze picks up. The lake is pleasant even on lightly overcast days.

Practical Tips

Pair Baofeng with a half-day elsewhere — the visit takes only 1.5–2 hours. Sit toward the front of the boat for the best views and folk-song interaction. Bring sun protection; there is little shade on the open water.
