Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie
The Mountain with a Gate to Heaven
Rising 1,518 metres directly above Zhangjiajie city, Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate Mountain) is the area's most thrilling day out. Unlike the forest park's pillars, Tianmen is a single great massif famous for a giant natural cave-arch near its summit, a dizzying cable car, and glass walkways glued to vertical cliffs. It is easy to reach straight from the city centre, making it a perfect contrast to a day among the sandstone peaks.

What to See
The ride up is the Tianmen Mountain Cableway, at about 7,455 metres one of the longest passenger cable cars in the world, gliding over the city and the switchback road below. At the top, walk the network of glass skywalks — including the Coiling Dragon Cliff walk — cantilevered over sheer drops. To reach Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave), a 131-metre-high natural arch, you descend the serpentine Tongtian Avenue road (99 hairpin bends) and climb the 999 stairs, or take the tiered escalators.
Opening Hours
Open daily, generally 08:00–16:00 for last cable-car boarding, with the mountain closing around 18:00. Hours shorten in winter.

Tickets
A single all-inclusive ticket (around ¥285) covers the cable car, the eco shuttle buses, the summit escalators and insurance. Glass-skywalk shoe covers and the forest mini-cable-car are small optional extras.
Getting There
Uniquely, the cableway's lower station sits right in downtown Zhangjiajie, a short taxi or bus ride from the railway station. This makes Tianmen the easiest major attraction to visit without staying in Wulingyuan.

Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn give the clearest skies and the best chance of seeing through Heaven's Gate. Clouds often swirl around the arch; arrive in the morning before the afternoon haze builds.
Practical Tips
Choose your route up and down at the ticket office — combinations of cable car, bus and stairs differ. If you fear heights, the glass walkways are optional and can be skipped on a normal path. Bring a light jacket: the summit is markedly cooler and windier than the city.
