Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave), Zhangjiajie
Into the Yellow Dragon's Cave
Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave) is the great underground attraction of Wulingyuan and one of the largest karst caves in China. Where Zhangjiajie's other sights point skyward, here you descend into a cool, multi-level limestone world of vast chambers, dense forests of stalactites and stalagmites, waterfalls and an underground river. Lit in colour and toured along boardwalks and by boat, it is a memorable change of pace and a reliable rainy-day option.

What to See
The route winds through several named halls across multiple levels, the largest big enough to hold a small theatre. Highlights include the boat ride along the subterranean river, the towering "Define-the-Sea Needle" — a slender stalagmite around 19 metres tall and famously insured for a huge sum — and chambers dripping with formations built over hundreds of thousands of years. Coloured lighting picks out the dragons, curtains and pillars that give the cave its name.

Best Time to Visit
The cave is a comfortable year-round destination, since the interior stays cool and stable in temperature whatever the season — making it ideal on a hot summer afternoon or a rainy day when the open peaks are clouded in.
Practical Tips
The cave is cool and damp; bring a light layer even in summer and wear shoes with grip for wet boardwalks. Photography is allowed but tripods and flash may be restricted in places. Visitor numbers can spike at midday with tour groups — go early for a calmer walk.
