Golden Whip Stream, Zhangjiajie
Golden Whip Stream (Jinbian Xi) is the easiest and most rewarding walk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: a flat, paved path that follows a crystal-clear creek for about 7.5 kilometres along the canyon floor, with sheer quartz-sandstone pillars rising hundreds of metres on either side. While most of Zhangjiajie is admired from clifftop platforms, this trail puts you down inside the forest, among ferns, ancient trees and the constant sound of running water. It is named after Golden Whip Rock, a slender 380-metre tower that guards the entrance to the gorge.
Why walk Golden Whip Stream
The stream is shaded, almost entirely level, and follows the water the whole way, so it suits families and anyone not keen on Zhangjiajie's many staircases. Troops of wild macaques live along the trail, and the valley was one of the filming locations used for the lush ground-level scenery in Avatar.

Best things to see
- Golden Whip Rock — the iconic 380 m pillar the stream is named after.
- Purple Grass Pool (Zicao Tan) — a still, green pool reflecting the surrounding peaks.
- Wild macaques — playful and used to people, but never feed them.
- Shuiraosimen — the junction at the far end where four streams meet, and the transfer point for the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie.
Opening hours and tickets
Golden Whip Stream sits inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and needs no separate ticket — it is covered by the park's combined pass (about CNY 240 in peak season, March–November; roughly CNY 115 in winter), valid for four days and including the eco-buses. The park opens at 07:00 with last entry around 17:00. The trail itself is open daylight hours; allow 2–3 hours to walk it at a relaxed pace.

Getting there
Enter through the main Forest Park gate; the trailhead is a short walk or eco-bus ride from the entrance. The path runs one way from the gate end to Shuiraosimen, so plan to either retrace your steps or — most popular — finish at Shuiraosimen and take the Bailong Elevator or an eco-bus up to Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, turning the walk into the first leg of a full park day.
Best season to visit
Spring and early summer (April–June) bring the fullest, clearest water and bright green forest, while autumn (September–October) offers cool, comfortable walking weather. After heavy rain the stream runs strong and the gorge fills with mist; in winter the flow drops but the path stays open and quiet.
Plan your visit
Wear comfortable shoes, carry water, and keep snacks zipped away from the monkeys. Walking the stream first thing in the morning means cooler air, fewer people and the best light filtering through the canyon.

Travel Tips
Walk one way
Start at the park gate and finish at Shuiraosimen, then ride the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie instead of doubling back.
Mind the monkeys
The macaques are bold and will grab open bags or food. Keep snacks sealed and don't feed or tease them.
Go early for water and light
Morning gives the clearest reflections in Purple Grass Pool and the calmest, least crowded trail.
