Great Hall of the People, Chongqing

Crowned by a tiered green-tiled dome that echoes Beijing's Temple of Heaven, the Great Hall of the People (Renmin Dalitang) is Chongqing's most recognizable landmark and one of the boldest pieces of 1950s Chinese architecture. Completed in 1954 and designed by architect Zhang Jiade, the auditorium fuses the circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the gateways of the Forbidden City, and the white marble terraces of imperial Beijing into a single soaring building. Inside, a column-free hall rises more than 65 metres and seats over 4,000 people, originally built to host political assemblies and now a stage for concerts and conferences.

What to see

The building is best appreciated from People's Square (Renmin Guangchang) directly in front, a wide open plaza where locals fly kites, dance in the evenings, and frame the dome for photos. A traditional triple-arch memorial gate marks the square's entrance, perfectly aligned with the auditorium behind it. Step inside with a ticket to see the vast circular hall, the painted ceiling, and the tiered balconies that ring the stage. Across the square stands the free Three Gorges Museum, making the area an easy half-day of sightseeing.

Opening hours

The interior is generally open daily, roughly 08:00-17:30 (last entry before closing); the square itself is open and free around the clock, and is especially photogenic when the building is floodlit after dark.

Tickets

Entry to the auditorium hall costs about 10 yuan, and a real-name online reservation is recommended in peak season; standing on People's Square to admire and photograph the exterior is completely free. The neighbouring Three Gorges Museum is free but also requires an advance real-name booking.

Getting there

Take Chongqing Metro Line 2 to Zengjiayan station and walk a few minutes to the square; the auditorium sits at No. 173 Renmin Road in Yuzhong District, the city's central peninsula. Taxis and ride-hailing apps know it simply as Renmin Dalitang.

Best season

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) bring the clearest skies and mildest temperatures, ideal for the open square. Chongqing summers are famously hot and humid, so visit in the early morning or evening; the dome looks its best at dusk when the lights come on.

Plan your visit

Pair the hall with the Three Gorges Museum opposite, then continue to nearby Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave for an easy day in central Chongqing.
