Jiefangbei (解放碑), the People's Liberation Monument, is the literal and figurative centre of downtown Chongqing. The slender octagonal clock tower was first raised in the early 1940s to honour the wartime capital's resistance during the Japanese bombing of the city, and renamed the Liberation Monument in 1950. What was once the tallest structure for miles is now dwarfed by a ring of glass towers, yet it remains the city's "kilometre zero" and its most popular meeting point, standing in the middle of a buzzing pedestrian plaza.

The plaza and shopping district

Today Jiefangbei names not just the monument but the CBD pedestrian zone around it — one of the busiest and most fashionable shopping districts in western China. Department stores, global flagship boutiques, street snacks and hotpot restaurants radiate out in every direction, and the square fills with shoppers, performers and selfie-takers from morning until late at night. Come after dark for the full effect, when the surrounding towers light up with giant LED screens and the monument glows against the neon.

What to do nearby

Jiefangbei is the perfect base for exploring downtown on foot. The cliffside Hongya Cave stilt complex is a 10–15 minute walk north toward the river; the Yangtze River Cableway and the riverside promenade are a similar distance south and east. Foodies should dive into the side streets — the warren of lanes around Bayi Road Snack Street serves some of the city's most famous xiaomian noodles, skewers and suan la fen hot-and-sour noodles.

Practical tips

The monument and plaza are free and open around the clock; shops generally run 10am–10pm. Several metro lines converge nearby (Jiaochangkou and Linjiangmen stations are both short walks away), making it an easy hub to reach. The area is intensely crowded on weekends and holidays. Because Chongqing's downtown is built on steep terrain, be ready for stairs, slopes and the city's famously disorienting multi-level streets.

Best time to visit

Evening is when Jiefangbei is at its most photogenic and lively, though also its most packed. Spring and autumn evenings are pleasant; summer nights stay warm and humid but the crowds and lights carry the energy. Allow an hour or two to soak up the atmosphere, more if you fold in shopping, snacks or a walk to Hongya Cave.
