Daguan Park & Grand View Tower, Kunming

Daguan Park (大观公园), about 2 km west of the city centre on the shore of Dianchi Lake, is Kunming's best-loved classical garden. People come for the Grand View Tower (Daguan Lou), a graceful three-storey pavilion that frames the lake, and above all for the 180-character couplet that hangs down its pillars — long celebrated as 'the longest couplet under heaven'.

The tower and its famous couplet

In the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty, the poor scholar Sun Ranweng stood here, looked out over Dianchi and wrote a 180-character matched couplet. The first half paints the lake and the Western Hills; the second sweeps through a thousand years of Yunnan's history before ending on a quiet, almost Buddhist reflection on the passing of dynasties. It made the tower famous overnight and is still treated as one of Yunnan's great pieces of cultural heritage. The present square, three-storey tower dates from 1883; from the upper floors you look across the water to the 'Sleeping Beauty' silhouette of the Western Hills.

A garden to wander

Beyond the tower, Daguan is a proper strolling garden of linked islets, arched bridges, willow-lined canals and pavilions. In summer the ponds fill with lotus; in winter, migrating black-headed gulls arrive from Siberia and wheel over the water, a Kunming spectacle in their own right. You can rent a rowing boat, walk the long causeway out toward the lake, or simply sit with a cup of tea and watch local life.

Tickets, hours and how to visit

  • Entrance: around ¥20 for the park, plus about ¥10 to climb the Grand View Tower itself.
  • Hours: roughly 08:00–18:00 for the gardens; the grounds stay lit into the evening (until around 21:30) on some days.
  • Getting there: buses 4, 22, 54, 100 and others run to Daguan Park; a Didi from the centre takes 10–15 minutes.
  • How long: 1–2 hours, more in lotus or gull season.

Best time to go

Summer (roughly June–August) for the lotus; November to March for the black-headed gulls. Early morning is best for calm water and reflections of the tower. The park is also a fine spot for sunset over Dianchi.

Visitor tips

Bring small change for the boat hire and the tower-climb ticket. If you're visiting in gull season, you can buy bird feed at the gates, but follow the posted rules. Daguan sits on the same northern shore as Dianchi Lake and the Nationalities Village, so it slots easily into a lakeside day.
