Yuantong Temple, Kunming
Yuantong Temple (圆通寺) is the oldest and largest Buddhist temple in Kunming, first built more than 1,200 years ago during the Tang dynasty and rebuilt several times since. It sits in the middle of the modern city at the foot of Yuantong Hill, a five-minute walk from Green Lake Park, which makes it one of the easiest historic sights to fit into a Kunming day.
The temple you walk down into
Most Chinese temples climb uphill so you ascend toward the main hall. Yuantong does the opposite. You enter at street level and walk down a wide stone stairway into the complex, so the courtyard sits in a hollow below the entrance. The centrepiece is a square pond crossed by stone bridges, with an octagonal pavilion (the Yuantong Treasure Hall area) seeming to float on the water. From the gate you look down over the whole layout before you descend into it, which is why photographers come here for the reflections in the early morning.

What to see
- The pond and octagonal pavilion — the signature view, framed by red railings and yellow-tiled roofs.
- Yuantong Treasure Hall, the main hall, with two large stone pillars carved with coiling dragons.
- A Theravada (Southeast Asian) Buddha hall at the back, a gift connected to Thailand, alongside the Han Mahayana halls — a reminder that Yunnan borders Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, so all three branches of Buddhism meet here.
- Yuantong Hill behind the temple, planted with cherry and crabapple blossom that draws crowds in early spring.

Tickets, hours and how to visit
- Entrance: ¥6, one of the cheapest temple tickets in China.
- Hours: roughly 08:00–17:30 daily; the temple opens earlier (around 05:30) on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, when local worshippers arrive to burn incense.
- Getting there: take Metro Line 5 to Yuantongshan station and walk about 400 m south, or any of the many buses (85, 92, 100, 101, 119) to the Yuantong Street stop. A taxi or Didi from the city centre is short and cheap.
- How long: 45 minutes to an hour is enough for most visitors.
Best time to go
Come at opening time for soft light and an almost empty courtyard, or in March when the blossom on Yuantong Hill is out. Avoid the 1st and 15th of the lunar month if you want quiet, as those are the busiest incense days. Yuantong pairs naturally with Green Lake Park next door for a relaxed half-day on foot.
Visitor tips
Dress modestly inside the halls, and step over (not on) the raised wooden thresholds, as local custom holds. Incense is sold on site, so you don't need to bring your own. Photography is fine in the courtyards; be discreet inside the halls where people are praying.
