Yunnan Nationalities Village, Kunming
Yunnan is the most ethnically diverse province in China, home to 25 officially recognised minority groups, and the Yunnan Nationalities Village (云南民族村) is the easiest place to get an overview of them in a single afternoon. Spread along the northern shore of Dianchi Lake, at the foot of the Western Hills, it is a large open-air park where each minority's traditional houses are rebuilt full-size, staffed by costumed performers and craftspeople.
A province's cultures under one gate
Past the ornate triple-arch entrance, paths wind between recreated villages: the Dai with their golden Buddhist pagodas and bamboo stilt houses, the Bai with their white-walled courtyards from Dali, the Yi, Miao, Naxi, Wa, Jingpo, Hani and more. Each cluster has its own architecture, music and craft demonstrations, so a loop of the park is really a loop through Yunnan's geography, from tropical Xishuangbanna in the south to the mountain peoples of the northwest.

Shows and festivals
The park is built around performance. Song-and-dance shows run through the day (mainly between about 09:00 and 17:00) in the central squares and theatre, and the village stages scaled-down versions of real ethnic festivals — the Dai Water-Splashing Festival, the Yi Torch Festival and others — on a rotating schedule. Check the day's show times on the board near the entrance when you arrive and plan your loop around them.

Tickets, hours and how to visit
- Entrance: around ¥90 for the main park (some performances and the evening show may cost extra).
- Hours: roughly 09:00 onwards, with performance times concentrated in the daytime; allow at least half a day.
- Getting there: buses 44, 24 and the tourist line run to the Nationalities Village stop on Dianchi Road; a Didi from central Kunming takes about 25 minutes.
- How long: 3–4 hours to see the main villages and a couple of shows; longer if you want to walk the whole park.
Best time to go
Any clear day works, but the park is at its liveliest during the staged festivals, so it's worth checking the schedule before you go. It pairs perfectly with the Western Hills, just behind it: many visitors ride the cable car up Xishan in the morning and visit the village in the afternoon, or vice versa.
Visitor tips
It's a big site with a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The performances are the highlight, so prioritise show times over trying to see every house. Photography is welcomed, and performers are usually happy to pose. If you only have time for part of it, the Dai and Bai villages are the most visually striking.
