Lijiang 3-Day Itinerary: Old Town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain & Tiger Leaping Gorge
High on the Yunnan plateau at around 2,400 m, Lijiang is where cobbled Naxi lanes, snow peaks, and turquoise canals come together. This 3-day itinerary balances the UNESCO-listed Old Town, the glacier heights of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the raw drama of Tiger Leaping Gorge — a classic loop that first-time visitors can do at a comfortable altitude-aware pace.
Who it's for: scenery lovers, photographers, and travellers who want culture plus mountains. Best season: March–June and September–November for clear skies; winter is cold but the snow mountain shines, and the July–August rains can close gorge trails. Pace: Day 1 easy, Day 2 high-altitude, Day 3 active. Spend your first hours taking it slow — Lijiang sits high enough to feel the thin air.
Getting to Lijiang
Most travellers fly into Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (about 30 km south of town) from Kunming, Chengdu, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. There is also a high-speed rail link from Kunming to Lijiang (about 3–3.5 hours). From the airport, an airport bus or taxi reaches the Old Town in 40–60 minutes. For rail planning, see booking China train tickets. Browse the full Lijiang destination guide for background before you go.
Day 1 — Old Town, Mu Palace & Black Dragon Pool
Morning — Black Dragon Pool. Start gently at Black Dragon Pool in Jade Spring Park, where the Moon-Embracing Pavilion and a five-arch bridge frame a postcard reflection of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on a clear morning. It's the best low-effort introduction to Lijiang's setting.
Midday — into the Old Town. Wander down into Lijiang Old Town (Dayan), a 800-year-old maze of canals, water wheels, and grey-tiled Naxi houses. Find Sifang Street (the central square), follow a stream uphill, and don't worry about getting lost — that's the point.

Afternoon — Mu Palace & Lion Hill. Tour the Mu Palace, the restored residence of the Naxi chieftains, then climb Lion Hill behind it to the Wangu Pavilion for a rooftop panorama of the whole town.
Evening. Lijiang glows after dark — lantern-lit bars along the canals, Naxi music, and grilled snacks. Note that a one-time 50-yuan Old Town maintenance fee (valid one year) now applies and also covers Black Dragon Pool, Baisha, and Shuhe.
Day 2 — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Dedicate a full day to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the sacred massif whose highest peak, Shanzidou, tops out at 5,596 m. Book your timed cable-car ticket 1–3 days ahead in peak season — entry uses passport-name registration and walk-up slots often sell out.

- Glacier Park Big Cable Car climbs to a boardwalk at 4,506 m — the highest point open to visitors, beside the Baishui Glacier. Move slowly and consider a portable oxygen can sold on site.
- Blue Moon Valley (White Water River) below the peak has milky-turquoise pools fed by glacial melt.
- Impression Lijiang, Zhang Yimou's open-air show, performs against the mountain backdrop most days.
Lower, gentler alternatives — Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow — are good if the altitude bothers you. Return to town by late afternoon and rest.
Day 3 — Tiger Leaping Gorge (or Shuhe & Baisha)
Option A — Tiger Leaping Gorge. About two hours north, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the world's deepest canyons, where the Jinsha River roars between 2,000-m cliffs. The Upper Gorge has accessible viewing platforms and boardwalks for a day visit; serious hikers tackle the famous two-day high trail.
Option B — a slower day. Prefer culture over canyons? Visit Shuhe Ancient Town, a quieter, less commercial old town on the Tea Horse Road, and Baisha Old Town for its centuries-old Ming-dynasty murals. With more time, the remote lake villages of Lugu Lake make a worthwhile overnight extension.
Where to stay
The Old Town is full of courtyard guesthouses — atmospheric, but bring earplugs near the bar streets and expect to haul luggage over cobbles (the town is largely car-free). For quiet, choose the upper lanes or Shuhe. See where to stay in China for booking advice, and load offline maps via our essential China apps guide.
Practical tips
- Altitude: Lijiang is ~2,400 m and the snow mountain over 4,500 m. Hydrate, go slow on Day 1, and don't drink heavily your first night.
- Sun & cold: strong UV by day, cold nights year-round — layer up and bring sunscreen even in winter.
- Cash & QR: mobile pay is everywhere, but carry a little cash for tiny stalls. Set up payment apps before arrival.
- Book the mountain early and bring your passport for ticket registration.
FAQ
How many days do you need in Lijiang? Three days covers the Old Town, the snow mountain, and one big add-on (the gorge or a slower culture day). Add a fourth or fifth day for Lugu Lake or Shangri-La beyond.
Is the altitude a problem? Lijiang itself is manageable for most people, but the Glacier Park at 4,506 m can cause shortness of breath. Acclimatise on Day 1 and ascend slowly; oxygen cans are sold at the mountain.
Do I need to pre-book Jade Dragon Snow Mountain? Yes — cable-car tickets are time-slotted and require passport registration. Book 1–3 days ahead in the April–October peak season.
Can I see Tiger Leaping Gorge in a day from Lijiang? Yes. The Upper Gorge viewing area is a comfortable day trip with boardwalks and platforms; only the full high-trail trek needs an overnight.
