Lijiang: Yunnan's Timeless Old Town Beneath a Snow Mountain

Tucked into the highlands of northwest Yunnan at around 2,400 metres above sea level, Lijiang is one of China's most enchanting destinations — a UNESCO World Heritage town of cobbled lanes, gurgling canals and Naxi culture, watched over by the glittering peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. For international travellers it offers a rare blend of living history, dramatic alpine scenery and easy-going café culture, all within a compact, walkable area.

Lijiang Old Town (Dayan)

The heart of any visit is the Old Town of Lijiang, known locally as Dayan. Founded more than 800 years ago and inscribed by UNESCO in 1997, it is a maze of timber-framed Naxi houses, grey-tiled roofs, stone bridges and clear streams diverted from the Black Dragon Pool. Unlike many Chinese old towns, Dayan grew without a city wall, its layout following the contours of the land and the flow of water. Wander up to the Mu Palace (Mufu), the lavish former residence of Lijiang's hereditary Naxi chieftains, or climb Lion Hill for rooftop views over a sea of tiles.

By day, browse workshops selling silver, hand-beaten copper kettles and Naxi embroidery; by night, the lantern-lit lanes hum with bars and music. Don't miss Sifang (Square) Street, the historic market square at the town's centre. Note that a 50-yuan Old Town maintenance fee applies to visitors (valid for 365 days, with exemptions for children and seniors).

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Rising to 5,596 metres just north of the city, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan) is Lijiang's natural icon and a sacred peak for the Naxi people. The Glacier Park cable car whisks visitors from 3,356 metres to 4,506 metres in about twenty minutes, where a boardwalk climbs toward a glacier viewing platform near 4,680 metres — one of the highest points easily accessible to ordinary travellers in China.

At the mountain's foot lie Blue Moon Valley, with its tiered turquoise pools, and the open-air "Impression Lijiang" show directed by Zhang Yimou. Because the summit air is thin, take the ascent slowly, carry a can of bottled oxygen if you wish, and avoid the cable car if you have heart or respiratory conditions.

Beyond the Old Town

Lijiang rewards travellers who linger. Just north of Dayan, Black Dragon Pool Park frames a postcard-perfect reflection of the snow mountain behind the Deyue Pavilion. Quieter Shuhe Old Town and the fresco-filled village of Baisha offer the same Naxi charm with fewer crowds. Further afield, the thundering Tiger Leaping Gorge — one of the world's deepest river canyons — and the matriarchal Mosuo communities of Lugu Lake make superb multi-day add-ons.

Naxi Culture and Cuisine

Lijiang is the homeland of the Naxi, whose Dongba religion preserves the world's only living pictographic script. Catch a performance of the haunting Naxi Ancient Music, an orchestra of elderly musicians playing centuries-old Taoist melodies on antique instruments. The local table is just as memorable: try Naxi grilled river fish, chewy baba flatbread, chicken hotpot simmered with wild herbs and mushrooms, cured yak, and Yunnan's famous "crossing-the-bridge" rice noodles, all washed down with locally roasted Yunnan coffee or barley wine.

When to Go

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, with mild days, clear skies and the best mountain views. Summer brings green landscapes but also the rainy season, while winter is cold and crisp, offering snow on the peaks and far thinner crowds. Whatever the season, pack layers: highland days are warm in the sun but nights turn chilly.

Getting There and Around

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG), about 28 km from town, connects to Kunming, Chengdu, Shanghai and other major cities. Frequent bullet and express trains link Kunming to Lijiang Railway Station in roughly 3.5–5 hours, with onward lines toward Shangri-La. Within Dayan everything is best explored on foot — its lanes are pedestrian-only — while taxis, ride-hailing apps and day-tour buses serve the snow mountain and outlying sights.

With its mix of heritage, mountains and minority culture, Lijiang is one of Yunnan's must-see gateways — equally rewarding for a relaxed two-day stop or as the launchpad for a deeper Yunnan adventure.

Travel Tips

Acclimatise to the altitude

Lijiang sits at about 2,400 m and the snow mountain exceeds 4,500 m. Spend a day in town first, ascend slowly, drink plenty of water and consider a can of bottled oxygen; skip the high cable car if you have heart or lung conditions.

Budget for the Old Town fee

A 50-yuan Lijiang Old Town maintenance fee applies (valid 365 days, with exemptions for children and seniors). Keep the receipt, as it may be checked at some attractions.

Book snow-mountain tickets ahead

Daily visitor numbers for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are capped and cable-car slots sell out, especially in peak season. Reserve the entrance, shuttle and cable car online in advance and bring your passport.

Getting there

Fly into Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) or take a bullet/express train from Kunming (about 3.5-5 hours). The Old Town is pedestrian-only, so wear comfortable shoes.

Pack for big temperature swings

Highland sun is strong by day but nights are cold year-round. Bring layers, sunscreen and a warm jacket for the mountain even in summer.
