Lugu Lake
An alpine lake of the Mosuo people
Lugu Lake is a serene, deep-blue alpine lake straddling the border of Yunnan and Sichuan, sitting at around 2,690 m in the mountains northeast of Lijiang. Ringed by green hills and dotted with islands, it is famous not only for its scenery but as the homeland of the Mosuo, one of the last matrilineal societies on earth, where family lines pass through the mother and couples may keep separate households in the tradition known as the "walking marriage."

Panorama of deep-blue Lugu Lake with islands and the Gemu Goddess Mountain
The lake is overlooked by Gemu Goddess Mountain, revered by the Mosuo as a protective deity. Life here moves slowly: villages of timber houses line the shore, and hand-paddled "pig-trough" dugout canoes (zhucao boats) ferry visitors out to islands and across the glassy water.
Things to see and do
- Take a dugout-canoe ride to Lige Peninsula or one of the lake islands.
- Cycle or drive the scenic lakeshore loop road between viewpoints and Mosuo villages.
- Learn about Mosuo matrilineal culture and enjoy an evening of bonfire singing and dancing.
- Climb toward Gemu Goddess Mountain for a sweeping view over the whole lake.

Opening hours & tickets
The scenic area is open all day, with a scenic-area entrance fee of around CNY 70; boat rides and some viewpoints cost extra. From 1 January 2026 the Lijiang (Yunnan) side moved to real-name e-tickets, booked through the official WeChat account or major travel platforms rather than paper tickets — buy in advance to save time.

Getting there
Lugu Lake is about 200 km from Lijiang, a winding 4–5 hour drive through the mountains. Daily buses and many chartered cars and tours run from Lijiang; an overnight stay (or two) lets you enjoy sunrise and sunset over the water, which is the lake at its best.
Best time to visit
Autumn (September–November) brings the clearest skies and brilliant blue water, while spring adds wildflowers and, near the shore, blooming water plants. Summers are mild and green but wetter. Whatever the season, stay overnight: dawn mist and a star-filled sky are highlights that day-trippers miss.
