Shuhe Ancient Town

Lijiang's quieter old town

Shuhe Ancient Town (Shuhe Gucheng) is a beautifully preserved Naxi village about 6 km northwest of Lijiang Old Town, at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. An important staging post on the old Tea-Horse Road, it shares Dayan's cobbled lanes, clear canals and timber courtyards but keeps a gentler, more village-like pace — making it a favourite for travellers who find the main Old Town too busy.

Like Dayan, Shuhe is part of the Old Town of Lijiang UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spring water from the Nine-Cauldron Dragon Pool (Jiuding Longtan) flows through the village and gathers at the Qinglong (Green Dragon) Bridge, a Ming-dynasty stone bridge that is the town's landmark. Lanes of cafés, guesthouses and craft shops radiate from a small Sifang Street of their own.

Things to see and do

  • Cross the Qinglong Bridge and follow the canal to the Nine-Cauldron Dragon Pool.
  • Visit the small Tea-Horse Road museum to understand Shuhe's role as a caravan town.
  • Wander the quieter back lanes for a more authentic Naxi village atmosphere than the main Old Town.
  • Take a short horse ride, a nod to the village's caravan heritage.

Opening hours & tickets

The lanes of Shuhe are open all day and entry to the town is free — there is no separate gate ticket, though Lijiang's Old Town maintenance-fee rules can apply to the wider area. Individual museums or experiences charge small fees. Allow a half day, or stay overnight for the peaceful evening atmosphere.

Getting there

Shuhe is about 6–8 km from Lijiang Old Town, a 15–20 minute taxi ride; buses also connect the two. It's an easy add-on to a Lijiang itinerary and pairs well with Baisha village further north.

Best time to visit

As with the rest of Lijiang, spring and autumn offer the clearest skies and the best mountain backdrop. Shuhe is at its most charming in the early morning and evening, when day-trippers have gone and the canals, bridges and lantern-lit lanes are quiet — a good reason to stay the night.
