Kunming

Dianchi Lake

Dianchi is the largest lake in Yunnan and the green-blue backdrop to Kunming's southwest edge. Roughly 40 kilometers long, it has shaped the city for centuries, and its shoreline parks are where locals come to walk, fly kites, and watch the water. For visitors the lake is free to enjoy and pairs naturally with a climb up the Western Hills that frame its western shore.

The winter gulls

Dianchi's signature event arrives every November, when tens of thousands of red-billed gulls fly in from Siberia to spend the winter. They gather at Haigeng Park and along the dam, swooping for bread tossed from the promenade, and they stay until around March. The sight of clouds of white birds over the lake has become one of Kunming's best-loved images.

Where to go on the shore

Haigeng Park and Haigeng Dam give the easiest access, with long lakeside walks and views across to the Western Hills. The neighboring Yunnan Nationalities Village sits on the same stretch if you want to combine the lake with a cultural stop. From the dam a cable car crosses toward the Dragon Gate on the hills above.

When to visit

The lakeside is pleasant year-round, but two times stand out: winter (November to March) for the gulls, and clear spring days when the snow-dusted hills reflect in the water. Mornings are calm; afternoons can be breezy, which is why you will see so many kites.

Practical notes

Entry to the lakeside parks is free. Metro and city buses reach Haigeng, and ride-hailing from downtown takes about 20 minutes. Bring a windbreaker, as the open water makes the shore cooler than the city center, and small change if you want to buy gull feed in winter.
