Kunming 3-Day Itinerary: Temples, Dianchi Lake & the Stone Forest (2026)

9 min read

Kunming, the "Spring City", is the gateway to Yunnan: mild all year, ringed by lakes and hills, and packed with culture from China's most diverse province. Three days is the sweet spot — long enough to mix the temples and gardens of the city with a day trip out to the surreal Stone Forest. This itinerary links the best of Kunming into an easy, walkable plan.

When to go and how long

Kunming earns its nickname: spring and autumn are gorgeous, summers are mild and green, and even winter days are sunny, though nights get cold. March brings blossom; winter brings the famous black-headed gulls. Three days covers the city comfortably with one excursion. With a fourth or fifth day, add the high-speed train to Dali or Lijiang, both a few hours away.

Day 1 — City temples and gardens

Start in the green heart of the city at Green Lake Park, where locals practise tai chi and, in winter, feed the gulls. From there it's a five-minute walk to Yuantong Temple, Kunming's oldest Buddhist temple, with its unusual sunken courtyard and octagonal pavilion on a pond. After lunch, head northeast to the Golden Temple (Jindian), China's largest bronze hall, set in a leafy hillside park. It's a relaxed first day that eases you into the city's altitude (about 1,900 m).

Day 2 — Dianchi Lake and the Western Hills

Spend the second day on the lake. Begin at Daguan Park and climb the Grand View Tower to read its famous 180-character couplet over Dianchi Lake. Move along the shore to the Yunnan Nationalities Village, where the homes and festivals of 25 minorities are recreated full-size. In the afternoon, take the cable car up the Western Hills to the Dragon Gate, a cliff-edge walk carved into the rock with the whole lake spread out below.

Day 3 — Day trip to the Stone Forest

Save a full day for the Stone Forest (Shilin), a UNESCO-listed maze of grey limestone pinnacles about 90 km southeast of the city. Trains from Kunming East to Shilin take under 90 minutes, then a short shuttle to the gate; allow three to four hours to wander the karst paths. It is the single most photographed landscape in Yunnan, and the local Sani (a branch of the Yi) add colour with their embroidery and songs.

Getting around

Kunming has a clean, cheap metro and endless buses, and ride-hailing (Didi) is the easiest way to reach the outlying sights. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive — almost nothing takes cash. For onward travel, the high-speed rail network links Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, Guilin and beyond.

FAQ

Is three days enough for Kunming? Yes. Three days covers the city's temples, gardens and lake plus a day trip to the Stone Forest. Add days if you want to continue to Dali or Lijiang.

Do I need to book the Stone Forest in advance? In peak season (summer and the October holiday) buy the train ticket a day or two ahead; the park itself rarely sells out.

What's the best time to visit Kunming? March to October is reliably pleasant; come in winter (November–March) for sunshine and the black-headed gulls.

How do I get from Kunming to the Stone Forest? Take a high-speed train from Kunming East to Shilin (under 90 minutes), then a short shuttle bus to the entrance.
