Panmen Scenic Area

The Panmen Scenic Area guards the southwest corner of Suzhou's ancient moat, preserving one of the city's oldest and most monumental corners. Its centrepiece is the Pan Gate itself — the only surviving combined land-and-water city gate in China, whose roots reach back to the founding of Suzhou in 514 BC. Together with two other landmarks it forms the celebrated "Three Sights of Panmen."

What to see

The "Three Sights" are the Pan Gate, with its double water-gates and land-gates that once controlled boats and troops; the Ruiguang Pagoda, a 53.6-metre octagonal brick-and-timber tower first raised between 1004 and 1030 in the Northern Song dynasty; and the Wumen Bridge, the tallest single-arch stone bridge in Suzhou, whose high span frames classic reflections in the canal. Landscaped gardens, halls and waterside pavilions link them together.

Getting there

Panmen lies in the southwest of the old town, beside the Grand Canal and the city moat. Take a taxi/ride-hail or the metro to the Panmen area; it is an easy add-on to a Grand Canal cruise.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are most pleasant. Late afternoon light is best for photographing the pagoda mirrored in the pond, and the night-garden sessions turn the gate and tower into a glowing spectacle.
