Pingjiang Road
Pingjiang Road is Suzhou's best-loved historic canal street, a lane that has run beside the Pingjiang River for some 2,500 years. Remarkably, its layout still matches the Pingjiang Map carved in stone in 1229 — proof that this corner of the "Venice of the East" has barely changed. Whitewashed Ming and Qing houses lean over the water, arched stone bridges hop the canal, and gondola-like boats glide beneath them.

What to see and do
Wander the flagstone lane and its quiet side alleys, cross humpbacked bridges for the classic canal photo, and step into teahouses to hear Pingtan — Suzhou's soft, sung storytelling. Boutiques, craft studios and snack stalls fill the old shopfronts. A short hop away are Suzhou Museum, the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Couple's Garden Retreat.

Opening hours
The street is a public lane, open and free 24 hours. Individual shops, teahouses and museums keep their own hours, generally from mid-morning to evening. Canal boat rides are ticketed and run during the day and early evening.
Tickets
Walking the street is free. Expect to pay only for boat rides, performances, tea or anything you buy along the way.
