Shantang Street

Shantang Street

Shantang Street is the grandest of Suzhou's old canal streets, built around 825 AD when the great poet Bai Juyi governed the city and dug a canal linking Changmen Gate to Tiger Hill. Stretching about seven li (3.6 km), it earned the nickname "the First Street of Old Suzhou." A waterway runs the whole length, flanked by Ming and Qing houses, stone bridges and guild halls — and after dark, by a blaze of red lanterns reflected in the canal.

What to see and do

Stroll the stone lane past teahouses, snack stalls and silk shops, cross the elegant Guangji Bridge, and take a wooden boat to drift beneath the bridges as the lanterns come on. Old guild halls and the Yuhan Hall recall the merchants who made this street rich, while street performers and Pingtan singers add to the buzz.

Opening hours

The street is open and free to walk at any hour, though it is liveliest from late afternoon into the evening. Shops and teahouses generally run from mid-morning until night; boat rides and some halls keep their own ticketed hours.

Tickets

Walking Shantang is free. You pay only for boat rides, performances, certain historic halls, tea and shopping.

Getting there

Shantang Street begins just outside Changmen Gate in the northwest of the old city, within walking distance of the Lingering Garden and on the historic water route to Tiger Hill. Take a taxi or the metro to the Shantang Street area.

Best time to visit

Evenings are magical, when the lanterns glow and the canal mirrors the lights. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather; weekdays are calmer than crowded weekends and holidays.
