Why visit Suzhou

Just 25 minutes by high-speed train from Shanghai, Suzhou is the quintessential Jiangnan water city — a 2,500-year-old canal town famed for its UNESCO-listed classical gardens, whitewashed Ming- and Qing-era lanes, silk workshops, and a slow, refined way of life. As the old saying goes, "Above there is heaven; below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou."

What to see

Classical Gardens — The Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden are the grandest, while the intimate Master of Nets Garden is a masterclass in "borrowed scenery" and opens some evenings for Kunqu opera. Nine Suzhou gardens together form a single UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Best time to visit

Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) are ideal: mild, green, and the gardens at their finest. Summers are hot and humid; winters are damp but uncrowded. Late March brings blossoms, and the Master of Nets Garden's evening tours run roughly from mid-spring through autumn.

Getting there & around

High-speed trains link Suzhou with Shanghai (about 25–40 min) and Nanjing (about 1 hr 20 min), and reach Beijing in roughly 5 hours. The metro covers the old town and major gardens, while bikes and canal boats make pleasant ways to explore. Many travelers come on a day trip from Shanghai, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the gardens before the tour groups arrive.

Getting there

High-speed trains reach Suzhou from Shanghai in 25–40 minutes and from Nanjing in about 80, making it an easy add-on to any eastern China itinerary.

Best season

Visit in spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for mild weather and the greenest gardens; avoid the hot, humid midsummer if you can.
