Tiger Hill (Huqiu)

Suzhou

Tiger Hill (Huqiu)

Tiger Hill (Huqiu) is the most storied scenic spot in Suzhou, a green knoll wrapped in more than 2,500 years of history. The poet Su Dongpo wrote that "it would be a lifelong regret to visit Suzhou without seeing Tiger Hill," and the saying still draws travellers up its winding stone paths today. Legend says King Helü of the Wu Kingdom was buried here around 496 BC, and that a white tiger appeared to guard the tomb three days later — giving the hill its name.

What to see

Crowning the summit is the Yunyan Pagoda, a 47-metre brick tower built between 959 and 961 AD. Centuries of uneven settling have left it leaning more than two metres off vertical, earning it the nickname "the Leaning Tower of China." Below it lie the Sword Pool (Jianchi), a deep cleft in the rock said to hide the king's tomb and three thousand swords, and the broad Thousand-Person Rock, a sloping terrace where monks once preached to huge crowds. Pavilions, tea houses and a bonsai garden are scattered across the slopes.

Opening hours

The park is open daily, roughly 7:30am–6:00pm from May to October (last entry 5:30pm) and 7:30am–5:30pm from November to April (last entry 5:00pm). Evening sessions are sometimes added in summer and during festivals.

Tickets

Admission is about ¥70 in high season (April–October) and ¥60 in low season (November–March). Buy online or at the gate; bring your passport for ID-linked entry.

Getting there

Tiger Hill sits northwest of the old city, about 5 km from the centre. The easiest options are taxi/ride-hail or a city bus to the Tiger Hill (Huqiu) stop; many visitors combine it with a Shantang Street canal cruise, which historically connected the two.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather and the prettiest light. Arrive early to climb the pagoda terrace before tour groups, and linger near closing for golden-hour views over the rooftops.

Highlights

  • Yunyan Pagoda — the 1,000-year-old leaning brick tower nicknamed the 'Leaning Tower of China'
  • The Sword Pool, a rock cleft linked to the buried tomb of King Helü of Wu
  • Thousand-Person Rock, a vast sloping terrace steeped in legend
  • Classical pavilions, tea houses and a bonsai garden across the hillside
  • Sweeping views over Suzhou's old-town rooftops from the summit

Travel Tips

Climb early

Reach the pagoda terrace soon after opening to beat tour groups and get clear photos of the leaning tower.

Pair with Shantang

A canal boat once linked Tiger Hill to Shantang Street — combine the two for a half-day along Suzhou's waterways.

Wear good shoes

Paths are stone and slope steeply in places; comfortable footwear makes the climb easier.
