Canton Tower
Canton Tower is Guangzhou's defining landmark, a 600-metre lattice tower that twists into a slender curve locals affectionately call the "Slim Waist" (Xiaomanyao). Completed in 2010 for the Asian Games, it was briefly the tallest tower in the world and remains the tallest structure in China. Rising directly across the Pearl River from the gleaming towers of Zhujiang New Town, it is the single best place to understand the scale and energy of modern Guangzhou.

What to see and do
The tower is far more than a viewpoint. Glass-fronted observation decks climb the structure, culminating in an open-air deck near the top where the city spreads out in every direction. Thrill-seekers can ride the Bubble Tram, a ring of slow-moving glass pods that circles the very crown of the tower at 455 metres, or brave the Sky Drop — the world's highest vertical free-fall ride at 485 metres. A covered Spider Walk staircase lets visitors climb a stretch of the open lattice for those with a head for heights. At ground level, gardens and the riverside promenade make a pleasant approach.
Opening hours
The observation areas are generally open daily from 09:30 to 22:30, with last entry around 22:00. Evening is the most popular time, when the tower and the surrounding skyline light up and a nightly LED show plays across the facade.
Tickets
A standard observation-deck ticket costs roughly 150 RMB, with combination tickets that bundle the higher decks and thrill rides at a discount. Buying online a day ahead through the official channels usually saves around ten percent. Children under 1.2 metres enter free.

Getting there
Take Metro Line 3 or the APM line to Canton Tower Station; the base of the tower is a short signposted walk away. An evening Pearl River cruise that passes beneath the tower is a memorable alternative approach.
Best time to visit
Arrive in the late afternoon so you can watch the view shift from daylight to sunset to the full glittering night skyline in a single visit. Autumn (October to December) brings the clearest skies and the sharpest long-distance views; summer afternoons are often hazy, so check the weather before you go.
Practical notes
Security screening operates at the entrance, and queues build quickly at weekends and on public holidays, so a timed online ticket is worth the small effort. Allow at least two hours to take in the decks at an unhurried pace.
