Yuexiu Park

Turn up before nine on any morning and Yuexiu Park is already in full swing: tai chi circles under the banyan trees, ballroom dancers by the lakes, retirees singing Cantonese opera on the hillside. This is the largest park in central Guangzhou, entry is free with no reservation needed, and it gathers the city's founding legend, a Ming watchtower and surviving stretches of the old city wall into one hilly green space.

The Five Rams Statue and the founding legend

Guangzhou calls itself the City of Rams, and the story behind the name ends here. Legend tells of five immortals who rode into the settlement on rams carrying rice stalks, blessed it against famine and departed, leaving the rams to turn to stone. The granite Five Rams Statue that commemorates them was carved in 1959 from more than 130 blocks of stone and stands around 11 metres tall on Muke Hill, in the western part of the park. It is the most photographed spot in the park, so the plinth draws a steady crowd through the middle of the day; come early or towards closing for a clear shot.

Zhenhai Tower, the museum and the Ming wall

The red five-storey Zhenhai Tower on the ridge was first raised in 1380, when the city wall was extended over Yuexiu Hill under the early Ming. It has been destroyed and rebuilt five times since; the building you climb today is a 1928 reconstruction that replaced the wooden floors with reinforced concrete while keeping the Ming footprint. Inside, the Guangzhou Museum walks through two thousand years of city history floor by floor, and the top storey opens onto one of the best views over the old city. Below the tower, ruined lengths of the Ming city wall run through the trees, alongside the old Square Cannon emplacement.

Hours, tickets and what is free

The park itself costs nothing to enter. Gates open around 06:00 and close in the evening, typically between 21:00 and 22:00; times shift with the season, so treat the late end as flexible. The museum inside Zhenhai Tower keeps its own schedule: Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:30, with ticket sales and last entry at 17:00, and it closes on Mondays except during national holidays. Admission to the tower is a small fee paid on the spot; carry your passport, as ticket desks at Chinese museums routinely ask for ID.

Getting there

Take Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park station and leave by Exit B1, which puts you a short walk from the north gate, the park's main entrance. There are further gates on the east and south sides, and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall sits just south of the hill if you want to pair the two. Note that individual gates occasionally close for events or works, so if one is shut, the next is never far.

When to go and how long to stay

Morning is when the park is most alive, and also the coolest part of a Guangzhou day. Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather and the flower displays around the lakes. Two hours covers the statue, the wall and the tower at an easy pace; add more if you settle into the museum. The paths are hilly but well shaded, which makes the park a workable refuge even in the humid summer months.
