Xi'an
Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is the place to make sense of everything else in Xi'an. As the capital region of thirteen dynasties, Shaanxi sits on one of the densest concentrations of relics in China, and this museum — among the country's first purpose-built modern national museums, opened in 1991 — gathers roughly 1.7 million of them under one Tang-palace-style roof. Grey tiled eaves, symmetrical halls and a reflecting forecourt set the tone before you even step inside.

What to see
The permanent galleries march chronologically from Stone Age tools through Zhou bronzes, the Qin and Han, and into the dazzling Tang. Look for the gilded bronzes, the jade and the Tang gold and silver — ewers, cups and hairpins of astonishing craft. A separate, climate-controlled gallery preserves vivid Tang tomb murals lifted from the tombs of princes around Xi'an.
A free but rationed ticket
General admission is free, but the museum caps daily visitors (around 6,000) and tickets must be reserved in advance through the official website or WeChat account, usually opening several days ahead and selling out quickly. Bring your passport — it is your ID for the booking.

When to go and getting in
The museum normally closes on Mondays for maintenance, though it may stay open through the peak summer season, so check the current dates. Summer hours run roughly 8:30 to 19:00 (last entry around 18:00); winter hours are shorter. Arrive early in the day even with a booking, as queues build at the security gate.
Practical notes
The premium 'Treasures of the Great Tang' hall is a separate paid exhibition (around 30 RMB) and worth it for the finest gold and silver. The museum sits a short ride from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, so the two combine neatly into one half-day of Tang Xi'an.
