Huangshan
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)
Huangshan, the "Yellow Mountain," in southern Anhui province is the most famous mountain range in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its granite peaks, twisted pines clinging to bare rock, and seas of cloud that drift between the summits have shaped Chinese painting and poetry for centuries. For many travellers it is the single most spectacular scenery in eastern China — and, thanks to modern cable cars and summit trails, it is far more accessible than it looks.
Why visit Huangshan
Climbers come for the classic "four wonders": oddly shaped pines, grotesque granite rocks, the sea of clouds, and hot springs. On a good morning you can stand above a white ocean of cloud with peaks rising through it like islands; an hour later the mist lifts to reveal sheer cliffs and the famously gnarled Huangshan pines growing straight out of the stone. It is a landscape that genuinely lives up to the paintings.

Hiking versus the cable car
There are two ways up. Energetic visitors hike the stone staircases — the eastern steps take about 2–3 hours, the western steps are longer and more dramatic. Most people save their legs by taking one of the cable cars up and walking the ridge trails between viewpoints at the top. The summit area itself still involves a lot of stairs, so wear proper shoes and pace yourself; the scenery rewards a slow walk between Bright Summit, Lotus Peak and the Flying-over Rock.
Tickets, cable cars and opening hours
The park entrance and the cable cars are ticketed separately. The main ropeways cost roughly ¥65–100 each way depending on the line and season — for example the Yungu cable car is about ¥80 in peak season (March–November) and ¥65 in winter, and the Yuping line about ¥100 / ¥80. Cable cars generally run from 7:00 (6:30 on weekends and holidays) until about 17:00 from March to October, and 7:20–16:30 in winter. Note that each ropeway closes for about a month of annual maintenance in winter, usually November or December — check which line is open before you travel.

Stay overnight for sunrise
The single best decision on Huangshan is to sleep on the mountain. Summit hotels are basic and pricey, but staying overnight lets you watch sunrise over the sea of clouds — the experience the mountain is famous for — without rushing the last cable car down. Book well ahead, especially in summer and on holidays. Pack a warm layer even in summer: the summit is much colder and windier than the valley.
Best time to visit and getting there
Huangshan can be visited year-round. April brings wildflowers and fresh green; autumn offers crisp, clear views; winter turns the pines silver with rime and snow. Avoid the national holidays and the July–August school break if you can — on the busiest days the cable-car queues can stretch to two or three hours. The gateway is Huangshan City (Tunxi), reachable by high-speed train from Hangzhou, Shanghai and Nanjing; from there it is about an hour by bus to the Tangkou trailheads at the foot of the mountain.
