People's Park

People's Park

People's Park (人民公园), opened in 1911, is the green heart of central Chengdu and the best place to watch the city's famously relaxed way of life. Entry is free, and on any afternoon you will find retirees playing mahjong, families rowing boats, dancers, calligraphers writing with water on the pavement, and crowds settling into bamboo chairs at the open-air teahouses. It captures the easygoing spirit of Chengdu better than any monument.

What to See

The park's star is the Heming Teahouse, a lakeside institution where you pay a few yuan for a bottomless cup of green tea and can sit for hours. Around it spread lotus ponds, rock gardens, a boating lake and the famous "matchmaking corner," where parents post their children's dating profiles on umbrellas. There is also a sober monument to the 1911 Railway Protection Movement.

  • Heming Teahouse: tea, snacks and traditional ear-cleaning.
  • Rowing on the lake and strolling the lotus ponds.
  • The marriage-market corner and weekend folk dancing.

Opening Hours

The park is open daily, roughly 06:00–22:00, and is free to enter. The teahouses are busiest and most atmospheric in the afternoon.

Tickets

Park entry is free. You only pay for tea (from around 15–30 RMB for endless refills), snacks, boat rental or an ear-cleaning, all inexpensive.

Getting There

People's Park is in Qingyang District, right in the centre. Take Metro Line 2 to People's Park Station, which exits beside it, or simply walk from Tianfu Square, about 1 km east.

Best Season

Year-round. Spring brings blossoms and the liveliest teahouse crowds; summer offers shade by the water; autumn is mild and clear. Even on grey winter days the teahouses stay cosy and full.

Practical Tips

Don't rush — the point is to linger over tea and people-watch like a local. Have small cash ready for tea and snacks, and visit mid-afternoon on a weekend to see the park at its most vibrant.
