Chengdu 3-Day Itinerary: Pandas, Tea Houses & Mount Qingcheng (2026)
Chengdu is China's most easygoing big city — the capital of Sichuan, the home of giant pandas, and the spiritual home of mouth-numbing hotpot and slow afternoons in tea houses. Three days lets you meet the pandas, wander old streets and temples, and still escape to a misty Taoist mountain. This itinerary suits first-time visitors of any age and works all year, with spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) the most pleasant; summers are humid and winters grey but mild.
Each stop links to its own guide with hours, tickets and a map, so reorder freely.
Trip highlights
- Watch giant pandas at breakfast at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
- Sip tea and get your ears cleaned among locals in People's Park
- Time-travel through Jinli Ancient Street and Kuanzhai Alley
- Day-trip to UNESCO-listed Mount Qingcheng, birthplace of Taoism's holy mountains
Day 1: Pandas, Tea & Temples
Set an early alarm — pandas are most active at feeding time. Be at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding when it opens (around 7:30) to catch the cubs and adults munching bamboo before they nap through the afternoon heat. Two to three hours is plenty.

Head back into town for a vegetarian lunch at Wenshu Monastery, Chengdu's best-preserved Buddhist temple, with its own famous tea garden. In the late afternoon, settle into People's Park and the open-air Heming Teahouse — order a bottomless cup of jasmine, try a traditional ear-cleaning, and watch the city slow down.
Day 2: Old Streets & Three Kingdoms
Begin at the Wuhou Shrine, the memorial temple to the strategist Zhuge Liang and the heroes of the Three Kingdoms, then step straight out into the adjoining Jinli Ancient Street — a restored Qing-style lane packed with snack stalls (try dan dan noodles and san da pao rice cakes).
After lunch, visit the Du Fu Thatched Cottage, the tranquil garden retreat of China's greatest poet. As evening falls, move to Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alley) for teahouses, courtyard bars and street performers — Chengdu's nightlife at its most atmospheric.
Day 3: Mount Qingcheng Day Trip
Escape the city to Mount Qingcheng, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the cradles of Taoism. High-speed trains from Chengdu reach Qingchengshan station in about 30–40 minutes; from there it's a short ride to the gate. The "front mountain" is a half-day of forested trails, pavilions and temples — take the cable car up and walk down to save your legs.

With an early start you can pair it with the nearby Dujiangyan irrigation system, a 2,200-year-old engineering marvel. Otherwise, head back for a final Sichuan hotpot dinner. Just remember to specify your spice level — wei la (mild) is no shame.
Where to Stay in Chengdu
Stay around Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li or the Tianfu Square area for central metro access and nightlife, or near Kuanzhai Alley for old-town charm. See our guide to where to stay in China for details.
Practical Tips
- Getting in: Chengdu East and Chengdu South stations connect by high-speed rail to Xi'an (~3.5 h), Chongqing (~1 h) and beyond. Plan with our China train booking guide.
- Panda tickets: Buy timed entry to the Panda Base online in advance; it sells out in peak season.
- Apps: Sort out the essential China travel apps (maps, translation, mobile pay) before arrival.
- Hotpot: Order a yuanyang (split) pot if you're spice-shy — half clear broth, half fiery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is three days enough for Chengdu? Yes. Three days covers the Panda Base, the old streets and temples, tea-house culture and a mountain day trip. Add a fourth day for the Leshan Giant Buddha or a deeper Dujiangyan visit.
What time should I arrive at the Panda Base? As early as possible — aim for opening (around 7:30). Pandas are fed and most active in the morning and sleep through the afternoon.
When is the best time to visit Chengdu? Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are mildest. Summer is humid and hot; winter is grey but rarely freezing.
How do I get to Mount Qingcheng from Chengdu? Take a high-speed train to Qingchengshan station (about 30–40 minutes), then a short taxi or shuttle to the front-mountain gate. It's an easy half- to full-day trip.
How does Chengdu fit into a longer China trip? It pairs naturally with Xi'an and Chongqing. See our 10-day China itinerary for ideas.
